Oktoberfest Sausage and Sauerkraut
List of Ingredients
For the Sausages:
4 German sausages (Bratwurst or Weisswurst)
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 onion, thinly sliced
1 cup apple cider (non-alcoholic)
For the Sauerkraut:
1 pound sauerkraut (drained and rinsed)
1 apple, peeled and grated
1 teaspoon caraway seeds
1/2 cup white grape juice or apple juice
1/2 cup chicken broth
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon butter
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
Step 1: Prepare the Sauerkraut
Rinse and Drain Sauerkraut: Start by thoroughly rinsing the sauerkraut under cold water to remove excess brine. Drain well.
Cook the Sauerkraut: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the grated apple and sauté for about 3 minutes until it softens.
Add Sauerkraut and Seasonings: Stir in the sauerkraut, caraway seeds, and brown sugar. Pour in the white grape juice or apple juice and chicken broth. Mix well.
Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 2: Cook the Sausages
Sauté Onions: While the sauerkraut is cooking, heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they become translucent and start to caramelize, about 5-7 minutes.
Brown the Sausages: Push the onions to the side of the pan and add the sausages. Cook the sausages until they are browned on all sides, about 10 minutes.
Simmer in Apple Cider: Pour the apple cider into the pan with the sausages and onions. Bring to a gentle simmer and cover. Let it cook for another 15 minutes, allowing the sausages to absorb the cider flavor and become tender.
Step 3: Serve
Plate the Dish: To serve, place a generous portion of sauerkraut on each plate. Top with a sausage or two, and garnish with the caramelized onions.
Enjoy: Pair this dish with some crusty bread or pretzels and a cold non-alcoholic beverage to complete the perfect EURO 2024 viewing experience.
Tips and Variations
Sausage Varieties: Experiment with different types of German sausages like Bockwurst or Nürnberger Rostbratwurst for a different flavor profile.
Homemade Sauerkraut: If you’re feeling adventurous, try making your own sauerkraut from scratch for a truly authentic touch.
Additional Flavors: Add juniper berries or a bay leaf to the sauerkraut for extra depth of flavor.
